of America’s Heritage Abroad, Dr. Ariel Muzicant und der Chinesische
Gesandte Wang Shunqing kurze Ansprachen halten.

Biographien von Dr. Feng Shan Ho

Zwischen 1938 und 1940 rettete Feng Shan Ho als Konsularbeamter
der Regierung Chinas in diesem und einem anderen Gebäude in Wien
tausende Juden vor dem Holocaust durch die Ausstellung von Visa nach
Shanghai. Indem er die Anordnungen seiner Vorgesetzten ignorierte
und seine Karriere und eigene Sicherheit aufs Spiel setzte, handelte
er mit Mut, als die meisten anderen dies nicht taten.

Dr. Ho Feng Shan was Chinese Consul General in Vienna, and saved
thousands of Jews from the Holocaust by issuing visas and other
rescue documents to Shanghai. The dedication of a marker honoring
Dr. Ho will take place on November 6, 2008, at 11.30 a.m., in front
of the building Johannesgasse 22, 1010 Vienna. This event follows
commemorations in May, 2008 in Washington and June, 2008 in Shanghai.
Posted as a diplomat in Vienna from 1937-1940, Dr. Ho witnessed
firsthand the Anschluss, the annexation of Austria by Germany in
March 1938, and the subsequent imposition of Nazi racial laws and
terror unleashed on Jews. Many Jews sought to leave Austria but
found almost no country willing to allow them entry.
After being rebuffed by other foreign consulates in Vienna, Jews
found help from the Chinese Consul General. Dr. Ho issued thousands
of rescue documents, including to those arrested and sent to the Nazi
concentration camps of Dachau and Buchenwald on Kristallnacht on
November 9-10. With these documents, recipients were able to exit
Austria. Some went to Shanghai; others made their way elsewhere.
All survived.

For his heroic work, Dr. Ho was recognized in 2000 by Yad Vashem
in Israel as "Righteous Among the Nations," an honor reserved for
non-Jews who at risk to themselves took extraordinary steps to save
Jews. In 2008, following the Commission’s commemorative activities
in Washington, the United States Senate adopted a resolution honoring
Dr. Ho’s diplomatic service.
