Wien (OTS) - In Artikeln, die am Samstag, dem 5. Februar in der
"Washington Post", der "International Herald Tribune" und "The New
York Times" erschienen sind, bezeichnet Haider die von ihm gemeinsam
mit dem Bundespräsidenten und VP-Obmann Schüssel unterzeichnete
Präambel wörtlich als "an affront to the Austrian people", also als
"Beleidigung der Österreicher", berichtet die stv. Klubobfrau der
Grünen, Madeleine Petrovic. "Wenn Haider das tatsächlich gesagt hat,
ist die Präambel nach dieser Distanzierung nicht das Papier wert, auf
dem sie geschrieben ist", so Petrovic.

(...) He (gemeint ist Klestil) also required Schuessel and
Haider--who will not hold a post in the new government but will
remain governor of Carinthia province--to sign a document pledging
their respect for democratic values and acknowledging Austria's place
in history for collaborating with Adolf Hitler's Third Reich. Haider,
who has gained international notoriety for statements praising
aspects of Hitler's policies, said later that he was unhappy about
having to endorse the document, which he called "an affront to the
Austrian people."
"I have no intention to wander about in the world and apologize for
all
kinds of things," he told the German TV station ZDF.

unhappy about having to endorse the document , insisting ''it is an
affront to the Austrian people'' and vowing he would not travel
around the world apologizing for the Holocaust.

Austria Coalition Is Sworn In as Diplomatic Fallout Rises
By ROGER COHEN
(...) Defense Secretary William S. Cohen said the new government
"might be a step back into a very dark past."
The past in question is the Third Reich, enthusiastically embraced by
many Austrians in 1938 and occasionally defended by Mr. Haider in
references to Hitler's labor policies and his Waffen SS.
Mr. Haider has since tried to take back those remarks and, in a
declaration signed this week with Mr. Schüssel, committed himself to
"understanding for all human beings irrespective of their origin."
But in an interview today with German television, Mr. Haider appeared
to cast scorn on the document. "It is an affront for the Austrian
public that such matters of course have to be signed time and again,"
Mr. Haider said. "I have no intention of wandering around the world
apologizing for all kinds of things."
