* Main Work Civil Contract for lots S1 and S2 of new HS2 high-speed railway link in the UK * Consortium consisting of STRABAG (32 %), Skanska and Costain * Construction volume: approx. GBP 2 billion
Contracts
London - STRABAG, the publicly listed European-based technology group for
construction services, has been awarded the Main Work Civil Contract packages
for lots S1 and S2 of the United Kingdom's new HS2 high-speed railway that will
initially link London to Birmingham and later to Leeds and Manchester. The
project is being carried out by the consortium SCS, a joint venture together
with Skanska and Costain. STRABAG's share is 32 %.
The execution of the contract lots is divided into two stages: Stage 1, the
Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) phase, requires the contractor to design,
plan and estimate the works within a period of 16 months. This will serve as
the basis for determining the target price for stage 2, the actual construction
phase. Stage 1 has a contract value of about GBP 79 million; the construction
volume of stage 2 will be about GBP 2 billion.
"HS2 is an important project for the United Kingdom that will provide much-
needed extra capacity between London and the north of England. Following the
intense quality competition, we are proud that our extensive know-how in
designing and building high-speed railways has resulted in STRABAG being chosen
for this task together with our strong partners," says Thomas Birtel, CEO of
STRABAG SE.
Lots S1 and S2 in southern section of new railway
The first lot, S1, will link the two stations London Euston and Old Oak Common
station and comprises the construction of two tunnel tubes with a length of 8.8
km each. Lot S2 will connect from Old Oak Common station to the west with two
tunnel tubes with a length of 13.7 km each and an above-ground section of 2.2
km that will link up with Lot C1. This section will include bridge works as
well as embankments and through cuttings.
The design phase is to be completed in 2018. Construction is scheduled to last
until 2023 with the first trains running in 2026. In total, the companies in
the SCS joint venture employ more than 12,000 people in the UK.
