Slovenian Press Agency (STA) celebrates 20th anniversary - BILD

Wien (OTS) - The Slovenian Press Agency (STA) celebrates 20th
anniversary this year. The agency was set up on 3 June 1991 and
published its first news report on 20 June 1991, just five days
before Slovenia declared independence from Yugoslavia. The STA
notified the Slovenian and foreign audiences that its intent was to
"inform foreign media and other institutions abroad on the goings in
Slovenia and at the same time provide information to the Slovenian
media outlets". The STA contributed to Slovenia's information
independence, and has developed into one of the leading news
providers for foreign and domestic audiences on the Slovenian market.

The STA has over 200 subscribers, which include all major
Slovenian media outlets, business and financial institutions as well
as state and other institutions. The agency finished 2010 with EUR
3.6m in net sales revenues and some EUR 46,000 in net profit. Being
in 100% state ownership, a part of the funds for the STA's operations
are provided by the state, while the rest is generated on the market.

STA general manager Bojan Veselinovic said on the occasion that
the agency's business model is based on the development of new
services on what is a small and specific Slovenian market and on
efforts to increase its own revenues on the market. He also noted
that for the first time in 20 years, the functioning of the STA would
now to be regulated in a law, which is to change the form of
management to upgrade its independence.

The agency would not change its "traditional role" in terms of
contents - producing independent, credible, and timely information;
it will keep working to use new services and communication channels
to bring STA news closer to its users, according to STA
editor-in-chief Barbara Strukelj.

At the start the agency operated with a single desk, while now
over 100 journalists and photographers daily produce news reports in
seven desks dealing with domestic affairs, business, foreign affairs,
culture and sports as well as in an independent English-language desk
and a correspondent/photo desk. The main service in the Slovenian
language daily produces over 300 of news reports, while the English
Service, the only Slovenian media outlet to offer an extensive
coverage of daily events in Slovenia to foreign audiences, produces
between 40 and 50 news items. In addition, over 200 photos are
available to subscribers daily along with audio recordings from major
events.
