EANS-Adhoc: Jungfraubahn Holding AG / Jungfrau Railways are investigating using the building on the east ridge for a touristic purpose

ad-hoc disclosure transmitted by euro adhoc with the aim of a Europe-wide distribution. The issuer is solely responsible for the content of this announcement.

A unique opportunity has arisen for Jungfrau Railways to investigate the feasibility of a tourist attraction on the east ridge of the Jungfrau. Swisscom has decided to stop operating its radio relay station with effect from 2013.

The Swisscom directional-beam station is located at 3700 metres altitude on the east ridge between the Jungfraujoch-Top of Europe and the Jungfrau summit. The Aletsch Glacier and the Jungfraujoch can be seen from the radio relay station, which has underground access from the Jungfraujoch passing partly through the glacier, and there are unique views of the high alpine mountain scenery. Jungfrau Railways want to keep the building and are looking into how it can be used for touristic purposes. Should the plans become more specific, Jungfrau Railways will prepare a detailed project and provide more information in due course.

Europe´s highest radio relay station was brought into operation in 1954 and extended in the course of subsequent decades. The station was the first in Europe to establish radio relay connections across the Alps. It was used to transmit telephone and television signals and connected Germany with Italy in the international radio relay network. The introduction of new transmission technologies such as fibre optics has meant that the system is no longer of such great importance. The services that still remain today will be continued by other sites with effect from 2013.
