Cox plädiert für verstärkten Multilateralismus

EP Präsident vor Weltwirtschaftsforum "Müssen von Irak Beispiel lernen und USA für multilaterale Zukunft gewinnen"

Wien (OTS) - Speaking today - before joining political and
business leaders in Davos, Switzerland, for the World Economic Forum which begins on Wednesday this week - Pat Cox, President of the European Parliament said,

"We must put effective multilateralism firmly at the top of the Davos agenda."

"We must learn the lessons of last year's Iraq crisis - that countries ravaged by tyranny and war can only be successfully rebuilt through the UN and with the active support of the entire international community."

"Davos will be a wasted opportunity if we do not use it as a platform to make clear this new reality and enlist the United States' support in a multilateral future."

Cox added,

"At Davos, we must encourage political leaders from across the globe to find the political will to put down some markers about re-creating the conditions for effective multilateralism and redefining the role of the UN."

"For its part, the European Parliament will present the Annual Sakharov Award for Freedom of thought to Kofi Annan on January 29th in Brussels. This is a deliberate act of political will to show our unreserved commitment to multilateralism and to recall those who fell in Baghdad in our international public service."

Pat Cox will attend the World Economic Forum Davos from Thursday 22nd - Saturday 24th January.
