Henkel And Lion To Form Hair Colorants Joint Venture In Japan

Düsseldorf (ots-PRNEewswire) - Henkel KGaA, Düsseldorf (Frankfurt Stock Exchange: HNKG.F), Germany and Lion Corporation, Tokyo, Japan have agreed to form a joint venture company in Japan for their hair colorants businesses. Accordingly, Lion has acquired a 48.5 % interest in the Japanese hair colorants manufacturer, Yamahatsu Sangyo Group, the shares of which are wholly owned by Henkel Japan Ltd., a subsidiary of Henkel KGaA. Henkel and Lion will jointly operate their hair colorants businesses through Yamahatsu.

Yamahatsu Sangyo Group, the fourth largest marketer of hair colorants for the retail sector in Japan with sales of about EUR 75.5 million, was wholly acquired by Henkel Japan in March 2000 and since then has been operated by Henkel in co-operation with Lion.

Henkel and Lion formed a comprehensive alliance in consumer products last December in order to respond quickly and efficiently to the growing challenges of the markets. The forming of the new joint venture company is a typical example of concrete execution of this alliance. Both companies will utilise Yamahatsu as their joint business platform and make the best use of each party’s resources and know-how in order to establish a firm business on the Japanese market.

Henkel is a world-wide operating specialist in adhesives, brand-name products and in industrial specialities with affiliates in over 70 countries. Henkel is the number one producer of Adhesives, Surface Technologies and Industrial and Institutional Hygiene (jointly with Ecolab Inc.) on a world-wide scale. It is also one of the biggest producers of detergents and household cleaners world-wide, and occupies a leading position in Cosmetics and Toiletries in Europe. Cognis, the recently carved-out chemicals business is the world's leading producer of Oleochemicals.

With over 56,600 employees, Henkel generated sales of 3 billion Euro in the first quarter 2000, 12.9 percent up on the same period last year. Operating profit increased by 17.6 percent to 207 million Euro.
