1st Half-Year 1998: Mayr-Melnhof Karton AG exceeds previous year's
figure the fourth time in succession Preliminary Results as of June
30, 1998

According to preliminary figures, the Mayr-Melnhof Group has been
very successful in the 1998 1st half-year and once again meets high
expectations. Group sales continued to grow. Operating profit
increased significantly. Preliminary net income corresponds to
forecasts and exceeds previous years excellent results, even
excluding the effect of the reversal of the EU-Fine provision. Final
consolidated figures will be released on September 1, 1998. In the
cartonboard division, the order backlog shows a reduction which is in
line with the usual seasonal decline in the summer months. Order
intake at MM-Packaging remains satisfying. Due to the ongoing
strained situation in recycling, the Group's strategy has been
reconsidered for this division.

Future possibilities range from an external partner to a total
divestment. A final decision is expected within the current year. In
view of expected seasonal impacts, results of the 2nd half- year will
be below 1st half-year figures. Due to the positive demand from
Europe, price stability and satisfying utilisation of capacities is
expected in cartonboard as well as in packaging.
